Project Details

The site consisted of a townhouse bearing a traditional layout, revolving around a central staircase. The traditional architectural elements of the house were acknowledged and they were integrated within the design proposal. The internal spaces suffered from lack of natural lighting, and the design solution had to balance between preventing large open plans and extensive apertures. Being only 14m deep, the small back yard and the small roof terraces were the only recreational outdoor spaces.  The proposal retained the original divisions of the house but at the same time amalgamating the spaces through a set of sleek wooden fins to allow natural lighting filter through the stairwell, now acting also as a light well throughout the house. The kitchen and dining area adjoining the backyard were intervened in a way to create an indoor/outdoor space that is visually linked and can be fully opened for any occasion to create a large space.

The materials and geometry throughout the property remained minimal. The linear interventions balanced well with the decorative details of the old house and colour is obtained through the texture of the materials backed up against a white backdrop.
